The Ultimate 2020 Guide In Making A Minecraft Server

Servers play a great role in current online games with world-building objectives. One of the most popular games employing these Minecraft Servers is Minecraft. If you haven’t known it yet, Minecraft is a game wherein the possibilities of creative building and eliminating enemies can be endless despite the iconic pixilated graphics.

Hosting Minecraft servers helps you connect to other Minecraft players and decide your own localized rules. You create your community inside the Minecraft community and communication will be made easier. To make your own Minecraft server, here is a guide to help you with:

Get The Minecraft Java Edition

The succeeding instructions can only work with the Minecraft Jave Edition. You won’t be able to host a server with just the console or PC edition of the game. You can purchase and download the Java Edition on the website.

Update Your Version Of Java

To have things running smoothly and avoid any compatibility issues, it is important to update you Java on its latest version. You can refer to the Oracle website, download the latest version, and install it.

To secure that changes will take place, you will be asked to remove the old version before installing the new one. Make sure to restart your device before proceeding to the next step.

Download the Minecraft Server

To install the Minecraft Server, download first the file ‘Server.jar’ from the game’s official website. If the computer’s antivirus or internet browser detects the downloaded file as harmful, bypass or ignore the detection but only for this case.

Make a habit to put the downloaded file in a single, named folder for ease of tracing. Once the file is downloaded and sorted in a new folder, right-click on it and select ‘Run’. After some automated configurations, the ‘EULA’ agreement will appear wherein you need to accept it.

To do that, open the file ‘eula.txt’ to make some adjustments. Look for the line ‘eula=false’ and change it into ‘eula=true’. Save the file and when the agreement is completed, you can exit the EULA document.

Next, ‘Run’ the ‘Server.jar’ file again for more downloadable folders. After all of that, ‘Open’ the ‘Server.jar’ so that your server can be launched. There will be plenty of documents and windows opening and players with a similar internet connection to yours can find your server in the ‘Multiplayer’ tab.

For those with a different connection, there are further steps to address that. Once players can find your server, the next step is to provide commands to play.

Running The Server With Commands

In this next step, you will run the server. First, create the batch file needed by creating a text document from the server folder and save it as a ‘.bat’ file. After assigning an appropriate filename, double click and add the text shown below:

These commands are for smoothing things out with the RAM while running. Please note the ‘Server.jar’ is the filename of your server application. If renamed, then replace that part of the text document accordingly.

The ‘pause’ in the text is for problem-spotting to prevent crashing. After typing, save the file as ‘.bat’. Delete the ‘.txt’ version once the batch file is saved.

Launch the server to check if the batch file also activates. Once the file is launching, we will proceed to the customization of the server.

Setting Up The Properties Of The Server

In this step, it is more about setting up your own rules for your server. You can do this by opening the ‘Server Properties’ file and edit the texts. Here is a concise guide of texts that you can edit and their corresponding effects.

gamemode=survival                   - Default playing mode

gamemode=creative                  - Focus on construction rather than elimination

spawn-monsters=?                     - ? = true; monsters as enemies will appear

                                                            - ? = false; stop spawning monsters

pvp=?                                               - ? = true; players can fight each other

                                                            - ? = false; players cannot damage each other

enable-command-block=?           - ? = true; command block usable

                                                                - ? = false; command block disabled

max-players=?                                  - ? = number of players allowed to participate in the server

level-name=?                                    - ? = chosen name of the new map

Port Forward For Global Play (Optional)

Port forwarding is the method of having players with different internet connection play on your server. It depends on how the router enables the port forwarding since each router is unique. You can refer to other references for this one and make sure to use clear keywords since the process can be a bit complex.

Connecting To The Minecraft Server

To proceed, run the ‘Server.jar and the batch file and then, go to the ‘Multiplayer’ tab. Click on ‘Add Server’.

Add the server name and set the IP address as ‘public’ in the server address. The IP address must be unique and to make sure you input the right one, search online on how to determine your public IP address. After discovering and entering the numbers, add a colon and the port number ‘25565’.

Once done, there will be a visible green bar symbolizing connectivity. Your server now is trying to connect. If there is a failure, it might be due to the wrong inputted IP address or wrong settings on the port forwarding. If none, then your server is set to be enjoyed.
